Trolls, kings and hairpin bends… cruise to Andalsnes for Norway’s breathtaking scenery

Set on the shores of the glistening Romsdalsfjord, Andalsnes is a tiny town, home to just 3,000 friendly inhabitants in an area of outstanding scenery. Described as the ‘Alp town by the fjord’ and known locally as the ‘peak capital’, Andalsnes has been welcoming cruise ships and their passengers for over 120 years.

Norway’s fjord towns are always popular during the MSC Nordic cruise vacation itinerary and Andalsnes is no exception. Leave your luxury liner in the sparkling fjord waters and come ashore for a lungful of crisp mountain air and some of the finest natural scenery in the world. Encompassing nature and culture, our selection of excursion packages for Andalsnes and the surrounding area guarantee passengers the best deals on outings here.

One of Andalsnes’ most famous attractions is the Trollstigen Road (Troll’s Ladder), probably one of the most spectacular routes in Norway. Open seasonally, this winding mountain road and its 11 hairpin bends traverses magnificent scenery and is sheltered by a circle of majestic mountains, known as Kongen (the King), Dronningen (the Queen) and the ‘Bishop’, due to its resemblance to the chess piece.

At the Trollstigen summit is a fabulous viewing platform over the mountain valleys, down to the fjords and across to the Stigfoss waterfall. Marvel at Trollvegen, or Troll Wall, a huge cliff of gneiss rock, which, at over 3500 feet, is the highest vertical mountain wall in Europe.

Another way to experience the Troll Wall is via panoramic steam train on the Rauma Railway; this leaves from a station by the cruise port. Back down in Andalsnes, hunt for authentic Nordic holiday souvenirs in the Saturday crafts market.
