Amsterdam Directions
Port of Amsterdam: cruise ships dock at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, from where visitors can easily walk to the centre. The terminal has a large reception hall, extensive catering and shopping facilities and tourist information office. The Central Station and bus terminal, with its arrival and departure hall for coaches, means easy links for travelers across the country. The Amsterdam cruise terminal is busy in season, hosting some 100 ships from spring through fall. The terminal, near the start of the new Eastern Docklands development, is a 10-minute walk or a five-minute ride from Central Station, where all of the city’s bus, trolley and boat lines can be boarded.
Amsterdam Weather
Amsterdam has a cool oceanic climate, strongly influenced by its proximity to the North Sea to the west, with prevailing north-western winds and gales. Winter temperatures are mild, seldom below 0°C. Amsterdam, as well as most of North-Holland province, lies in USDA Hardiness zone 9, the northernmost such occurrence in continental Europe. Frosts mainly occur during spells of easterly or northeasterly winds from the inner European continent, from Scandinavia, Russia, or even Siberia. Even then, because Amsterdam is surrounded on three sides by large bodies of water, as well as enjoying a significant heat island effect, nights rarely fall below –5°C, while it could easily be –12°C in Hilversum, 25 kilometers southeast.
Summers are moderately warm but rarely hot. The average daily high in August is 22°C and 30°C or higher is only measured on average on 3 days, placing Amsterdam in AHS Heat zone 2. Days with measurable precipitation are common, on average 175 days per year. Nevertheless, Amsterdam's average annual precipitation is less than 760 mm. Most of this precipitation is in the form of protracted drizzle or light rain, making cloudy and damp days common during the cooler months of October through March. Only the occasional European windstorm brings significant rain in a short period of time, requiring it to be pumped out to higher ground or to the seas around the city. AMS01D - WINDMILLS & THE DUTCH COUNTRYSIDE - Duration: approx. 4 hours - 2012
Dutch traditions are the theme of this excursion which takes you from the port by coach for a guided tour of the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. The name derives from the defending wall “Schans”, which was erected at the end of XVI century for the war against the Spanish. Although the wall has since disappeared, the name was revived in 1950 when houses and small businesses from several neighbouring villages from the XVII and XVIII centuries were relocated here. Most of the houses are made of wood and sport the pretty green painted façades typical of the Zaan area. The village is home to traditional Dutch craft production, including a wooden shoe factory where you can see how the Dutch clogs are made. From Zaanse Schans we will continue through the countryside to a local cheese farm. Learn about the age-old process of cheese making.Please note: the excursion will end at the port for transit guests and at the airport for guests disembarking and with flights after 16.00 pm. Start your journey to real Dutch tradition. Drive to Volendam where the inhabitants still dress in raditional costumes and wear the typical wooden clogs. Volendam is representative of Dutch ancient tradition. Continue to the Marken, a tiny authentic fishing village built on a former island. A stop at one of the very few cheese farms where cheese is still made in the traditional way is also included.

AMS06 - THE WINDMILLS & THE CANALS (6 hours with lunch onboard) - 2011 If you are a keen photographer you will not want to miss the chance to take professional snaps in the most picturesque spots around Amsterdam. After leaving the port a short bus drive will take you to Zaanse Schans, the village of the windmills and one of the main tourist attractions of the area. You will admire a selection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses ; free time to stroll around before continuing to Edam, whose name originates from a dam on the little nearby river E ! We will tour the famous Anne Frank Museum and see the movable bookcase that concealed the annex where the Franks hid for over two years. You will learn more about the history of this remarkable girl while visiting the museum. Back outside, you can appreciate the scenic side of this attractive city with a visit to the popular flower market. Free time is scheduled for strolling the city or visiting the ‘Bloemenmarkt’ which stretches for a whole block and where you can admire a huge array of flowers, plants and purchase bulbs of Holland’s national flower, the tulip.
