Greece

Located in the Mediterranean area of southeast Europe, Greece and its many islands and islets is surrounded by the Aegean Sea to the east and south and the Ionian sea to the west

Greece borders the countries of Albania, Macedonia and Hungary to the north and Turkey to the east. Greece is perhaps most famous for its staggering legacy of its ancient peoples, making it the birthplace of modern civilization.

The Greeks, together with the Romans created the powerful and sprawling Byzantine Empire in 330 AD which was a major cultural and military power for over 1,000 years. During the Renaissance period that took place throughout Europe in the 1800s, many figures from the Greek intelligentsia fled to Italy and the rest of Europe, contributing to this period by introducing ancient Greek works to Western Europe.

Today, Greece is a fascinating point of call for cruise passengers and MSC cruise ships travel to a wealth of destinations here, from Athens to Gythion, Volos, Heraklion (in Crete), Katakolon and Argostoli (better known as Cefalonia, where the novel ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ was set).

Naturally, there is a huge amount to see and do in all these destinations, with both ancient and modern sights, as well as wonderful beaches and fresh Mediterranean cuisine.
