Hamad Port/Doha

Artificial islands and real richness

A journey to Qatar becomes special on an MSC cruise.

A cruise to Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Sir Bani Yas will introduce you to Doha, the country's futuristic capital on the Persian Gulf. The city is preparing to host the 2022 World Cup, enhancing its already awesome skyline with new super modern skyscrapers

The Aspire Tower in Doha (300 meters) dominates the skylines. It is the highest building of the country, whose shape is akin to a torch. This building is located near the city of sport, which has already hosted events such as the XII Pan Arab games and which will have a central role during the World Cup. Much of Doha, including places of worship such as the new mosque in the Qatar Faculty of Islamic studies, seems to be already in the future. Don't miss a visit to the Pearl, a futuristic artificial circular port which is being developed to the north of the city centre, and yet, as you will notice on your MSC excursion, the ancient heart of the city still beats strong.

In the historical centre of Doha you will find a Suq where everything – from camels to gold – can be exchanged, and the Al Khoot fortress, dating back to the end of the nineteenth century and now converted into a museum. During your cruise to Doha with MSC Cruises, some excursions will lead you on the discovery of the north of the country and the history of this fascinating Emirate. In Ash Shamal the Al-Zubara fortress rises up from the middle of the desert and dates back to the thirties. The building, which at first sight seems an enormous sand castle, has been completely restored and transformed into a museum. Near the fortress you can also visit the archaeological remains of another, even older, defensive structure, Qal’ at Murair. Also you will find Zubara, a village of traders and pearl divers, a settlement which dates back to the nineteenth century, and later abandoned.

  • INTRODUCTION TO DOHA

    CITY TOUR

    DOH01

The name Doha may have originated from the Arabic Ad-Dawha, “the big tree”, with reference to the big tree that stood on the site where the original fishing village arose. Today, Doha is considered the outstanding “Pearl of Qatar” and we invite you on a half-day excursion to discover this amazing city, combining different architectures and cultures. Your sightseeing city tour will unveil you Venice and its rivers and its gondolas, colorful buildings, luxury malls, residential areas and a beautiful port with private yachts. After the coach drive, you will head for the atmospheric Souq (Souq Waqif) in ‘Old Doha”, which is one of the most bustling areas of the city. Evolved from a weekend market where the Bedouins traded meat, wool and other products, it is now a maze of narrow alleyways filled with small shops, with goods piled high to the ceilings and spilling out onto the pavement, and with separate sections selling dress, tools, general hardware, spices, incense, Arabic perfumes, sweets and dried fruits. Highlights are the Falcon Souq as well as the Gold & Diamond Souq and the Spice Street & Animal Souq. Next, you will reach the MIA – the Museum of Islamic Art, putting Doha on the world art scene. The Museum of Islamic Art is aiming to hold the largest collection of Islamic art in the world - a bridge from the past to the future of artworks dating from the 7th to the 19th century, representing the full scope of Islamic Art. It includes manuscripts, ceramics, metal, glass, ivory, textiles, wood and precious stones from three continents. After the visit to the museum you will reach the port. Please note: guides for languages other than English are limited. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be in English only. • PANORAMIC DOHA

    CITY TOUR

    DOH10

Discover the highlights of Doha, capital of Qatar, a city where the old and the modern architecture blend. The tour starts with a drive thru from the south of Qatar passing to the famous Museum of Islamic Art on the Doha Dhow waterfront. You will have a photo opportunity in the Corniche area with the astonishing skyscrapers of West Bay. You will move on to the famous Pearl, an extraordinary artificial man-made island created in a shape of an oyster, spanning nearly four million square meters. Once fully completed, The Pearl will create over 32 kilometers of new coastline, for use as a residential estate with an expected 18,831 dwellings and 45,000 residents by 2018. Last stop will be at Souq Waqif – “standing market” – an open-air working market covering about four blocks in the heart of the city, close to the Corniche, the curving road along Doha’s seafront. Dating back to the XIX century, the souk was remodeled between 2004 and 2006 using traditional methods on an edict of the Emir. Artisans recreated walls of sunbaked bricks, avoiding steel reinforcements and using only wooden poles. You will have many shopping opportunities as you walk through the extensive souq with goods including gold, textiles, spices and falcons. Qatar

A desert surprise
A desert surprise

A journey to Qatar on an MSC ship is the best way to get to this small, semi-desert country that extends into the turquoise waters of the Persian Gulf.

Much of Qatar’s territory is barren and covered in sand, with the country's population concentrated on the eastern coast of the emirate, where its ultra-technological capital, Doha, is situated.

During MSC Cruises excursions, you will learn about the importance of this city. It becomes obvious when you consider that Doha accommodates at least a quarter of the country's population.

Once famous for the pearls that were harvested in its sea, in the 20th century, Qatar has benefitted from the revenues of its oil resources, which the country used to transform Doha into one of the most modern and safe capitals of the Arabian Peninsula

In recent years, the government of Qatar has also aimed to catch the attention of the world through sport, becoming the site for international athletics and football events. This policy did not spare the desert: you can “ski” even along the dunes around Khor al-Adaid, the Qatar’s inland sea located in the southern part of the country, near the Saudi Arabian border.
