George Town

A duty free paradise

Once disembarked from and MSC cruise ship in the Cayman Islands, the cruise goer is welcomed by the port of George Town. The capital of the island and of the country, it is a traditional Caribbean city with colourful wooden houses that alternate with newer buildings.

The houses on the narrow George Town streets are interspersed with artisan workshops, where you can find some rarities to take home as a reminder of your MSC cruise in the Caribbean Sea. You can take a plunge into the history of the island at the dual-purpose National Museum of George Town: you can both explore samples of the most interesting endemic flora and fauna, and trace the long and tough inhabited history of the island.

However, if you want to learn about the lives of the first European colonists, an excursion to Bodden Town located five kilometres from the capital is ideal. In this former capital of Cayman Islands, you can visit the Mission House, a building used as a family residence by teachers and missionaries during the 18th century. As an alternative, visit the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park located, in the east of the island. Here, if you are lucky, besides the riot of tropical plants you may also encounter the extremely rare blue iguana.

Lovers of shopping will also find great satisfaction in the Cayman Islands: the entire country is duty free. You just have to choose what interests you the most among the myriad of watches, liqueurs, jewellery and porcelain. There is even a museum of curiosities. Not far from Turtle Farm, sits the Cayman Motor Museum, which exhibits the incredible collection by the Norwegian businessman Andreas Ugland. His “pearls” include the original Batmobile and Batcycle from the Batman TV series, a replica of the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, considered the first car in the world, and another seventy rare cars and motorcycles.

    • SHORE SNORKEL

      ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

      GCA56

Once a fine barquentine that was built in 1900, the Cali – one of several names the ship was known by over her lifespan – finally met her nemesis when she sprang a leak and sank off the coast of Grand Cayman in 1948. Rumour has it that a cargo of rice, expanding on contact with the water, ultimately caused the hull to rupture and the wreck to scatter over the seabed. All this happened less than 50 yards/46 metres from the shore, enabling easy laddered access for your snorkelling session at this fascinating spot. You’ll be snorkelling at a depth of about 30 ft./9 m, perfect for observing the many creatures that have populated the wreckage over the years, such as tarpon, blue tangs, parrot fish, Bermuda chubs, angel fish and even green sea turtles and stingrays. Your return to the ship brings the outing to a close. Please note: guests must be at least 8 years of age to take part. The excursion is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike. Guests should be capable of using a ladder; alternatively, the wreck can be accessed from the small cove. The excursion is not available for non-swimmers.

Next up is the Cayman Turtle Farm, where you can watch a short film about the farm’s breed and release programme before getting to interact with the turtles themselves. You’ll first board an air-conditioned coach to reach the Safe Haven marina, during which your driver will provide you with entertaining information about the Cayman Islands. • ISLAND TOUR & TIKI BEACH COMBO

        SCENIC ROUTE

        GCA32

When you tell your friends and family about this excursion on your return back home, you will rightfully be able to claim that it took you to Hell and back. But as Hell is only the name of a town on Grand Cayman, there’s no need for undue concern. After leaving the pier, an air-conditioned coach will take you through George Town and up the western coastline, past the white powdery sands of Seven Mile Beach, the Governor’s Mansion and the quaint architecture of a historical Caymanian home before reaching Turtle Farm. Green and hawksbill turtles are bred and raised at this sea turtle nursery every year, with many later being released back into the wild. The tour then continued on up to the northwest of the island and the already mentioned town of Hell, which is named after an unusual rock formation. Postcards mailed from here are sure to raise a smile at home since each will be postmarked: “Mailed from Hell”. After your return to George Town, you will then head to Tiki Beach where you can enjoy the facilities, kick back and simply relax. Use of a lounge chair, changing rooms, toilets and freshwater showers as well as a welcoming glass of punch is included in the price of the tour. But more active pursuits are also on offer at an additional charge, with kayaking, jet skiing and parasailing just three examples. Tiki Beach also features full bar service and an à-la-carte restaurant at additional cost. Please note: guests under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Additional water sports activities are offered at the beach, the cost of which is not included in the price of the tour; guests taking part in such activities do so entirely at their own risk. Guests are recommended to bring swimwear, a towel, high-factor sunscreen and some cash to cover additional purchases.

      • REEF & WRECK SNORKEL

        SEA & SUN

        GCA30

Take yourself off the ship for half a day to discover two of the Cayman Islands’ best snorkelling sites, the first of which will be at the wreck of the USS Kittiwake. This former US Navy submarine rescue vessel was in service from 1946 right up to 1994, and then – in 2009 – was deliberately sunk at its present location off Seven Mile Beach to provide an artificial reef for local marine wildlife. While you snorkel around the 251 ft./76.5 m wreck, you’ll be able to see its main decks, look down smokestacks and catch glimpses of the ship’s hull and engine room. Next up is the so-called Cheeseburger Reef – a name that comes from a nearby outlet of a global fast-food brand – where a natural reef system can be enjoyed. At a depth of about 25 ft./7.6 m, you’ll be able to snorkel to your heart’s content. Finally and time permitting, the outing is rounded off with time to do some shopping in the centre of George Town before you return to the ship. Please note: guests must be at least 5 years of age to take part. Sightings of marine wildlife are common, but cannot be guaranteed.

      Cayman Islands

      In contact with nature

A vacation in the Cayman Islands means encountering a triumph of underwater life and stunning seaside locations, starting from Seven Miles Beach, a long crescent-shaped bay, amongst the most popular in the Greater Antilles.

Not seven, as suggested by the name, but five and a half miles of pure Caribbean beach with a choice of bars and restaurants and the opportunity to go snorkeling in its shallow waters. If you wish to indulge in an even more moving marine experience, you should not miss an excursion to Sting Ray City.

Protected by the reef that extends north of Grand Cayman, in fairly shallow waters (between 50 centimetres and two metres) there is a place where you can swim along with these large, friendly rays (with a full wing span of up to two metres), for these splendid and peaceful creatures actually enjoy contact with humans.

And if you’re lucky, you might also see the large moray eel that lives here. If you’re eager to encounter all the aquatic life of the Caribbean, you should visit the Cayman Turtle Farm, at the far north-west end of the island. This is a beautiful marine park where you can swim with the sea turtles and look at the feeding of sharks.
