Grand Turk Island

Diving into Crystal-clear Waters

During an MSC Cruises shore excursion to Grand Turk Island, a stroll down the main drags of Cockburn Town, which run alongside the gorgeous blue ocean, will take you past many of the island’s architectural highlights.

The Salt Raker Inn and Turks Head Mansion, two of Grand Turk’s oldest hotels, are fine examples of the wooden houses built in the 1830s and 1840s by Bermudian shipwrights who came here to collect salt. Other colourful buildings like the General Post Office line this area of Front Street, many of them constructed with ballast and timbers taken from the trading ships of the time, and covered with purple and orange bougainvillea as well as the occasional Turk’s-head cactus, recognizable by its red fez-shaped flower. The Turks and Caicos National Museum is among the island’s highlights. Here you can examine the remains of the Molasses Reef wreck, the oldest recovered shipwreck in the Caribbean, dating from around 1515.

After the wreck was discovered in the 1970s, some morons mistook it for a treasure ship and blew sections of it apart with dynamite looking for treasure. Key remains on display include the enormous main anchor, cannon and other weapons, hand- and foot-cuffs of prisoners and some tools. But above all, a holiday to Grand Turk during your MSC Caribbean cruise means outdoor activities. Of the good beaches that line the west and east coasts, the pick of them is Governor’s Beach, where the powdery sands dissolve into a turquoise sea.

It’s a superb stretch of white sand, backed by casuarina trees and fronting onto a magnificent turquoise bay. Be sure to bring water, as there are no facilities on the beach. On days when cruises are in port, ships will entirely monopolize the view: a surreal sight as they dwarf the tiny island.

Once you’ve skirted the south-east coast, you’ll stop to walk to a bluff for stupendous vistas of Gibbs Cay and other islets out at sea. Your drive will then take you past a replica of the Friendship 7 space capsule that returned to earth in the waters just off Grand Turk in 1962 as well as various flamingo-populated salt ponds, which once fuelled the island’s salt-trading economy. Next up is Cockburn Town, the charming capital of the Turks & Caicos Islands, followed by a visit to the freshwater North Wells, now solely used by cattle, birds and the island’s indigenous horses. Beautiful views of the ocean inlet called North Creek then await you on the drive up to the northernmost point. • The Ultimate Segway Ride Around Grand Turk

      ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

      GDT04

Treat yourself to the ultimate in cool when you step aboard a Segway PT and indulge in an easy, breezy and fully narrated ride around Grand Turk island on roads less travelled. Your 2 hours off the ship begin with a short drive to the Segway PT centre, where you’ll first have a chance to practise before you set off on your exploration. Look forward to the picturesque buildings on Cockburn Town’s Duke and Front Streets, historical churches, ancient cannons and structures cobbled together using wood from old ships. Best of all, your Segway PT is small enough to take you down the narrow lanes where the town’s ambience is at its most vibrant. Leaving Cockburn Town behind, you’ll then head out to one of the island’s lovely beaches, where glorious views of the coastline and the beautiful blue of the water await you, to be followed by a look at the salt flats, which were once the beating heart of Grand Turk’s now defunct salt-trading past. As you then head back to the pier and your ship, you’ll also pass a replica of the Friendship 7 space capsule that came back to earth just off the coast of Grand Turk in 1962. Please note: guests must be between 12 and 65 years of age, weigh between 100 lbs and 280 lbs and be at least 60 inches in height to take part. • Magical Mystery Ride in the (Semi-) Submarine

      NATURAL WONDERS

      GDT05

Avid divers from all over the world flock to the island to interact with the amazing aquatic wildlife found in its coastal waters – an experience you can now share from the air-conditioned comfort of Grand Turk’s very own Yellow Submarine. Or semi-submarine, to be exact, which you’ll reach by tender. Once you’re seated on the semi-sub, you’ll submerge to a depth of approx. 5 feet and cruise up the island’s western coastline. The experienced crew will point out and provide information on the various species of marine life you may see through the panoramic windows, such as turtles, stingrays, groupers, sharks and schools of tropical fish; then prepare to feel your tummy lurch as you pass over the “wall”: a sudden abyss of some 7,000 feet in depth. You’ll also get to watch as members of the crew take to the water to feed the fish – an unforgettable sight. After almost an hour in the water, your tender will be waiting to return you to the ship. Please note: guests must be at least 5 years of age to take part, and be capable of walking to the tender and using a short ladder. The underwater locations visited in the semi-submarine may vary, as may visibility, depending on sea conditions. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with mobility problems or who suffer with motion sickness or claustrophobia. A tender boat will provide transportation from the pier to the semi-submarine (and vice versa). Guests are requested to refrain from flash photography while on board the semi-submarine. No liability can be accepted for the safety of personal possessions such as any valuables, cameras, handbags and similar items, which remain the sole responsibility of each guest throughout.

    Turks and Caicos

    Creole flavours
    Creole flavours

The tiny but gorgeous islands of the Turks and Caicos are scattered over a long swath of sea to the south of the Bahamas.

The fantastic beaches and the great diving on all of the islands keeps this country in the upper echelon of West Indian destinations for an MSC cruise to the Caribbean.

The country comprises two groups of islands – eight inhabited and around forty uninhabited – separated by the Columbus Passage, a deep-water channel up to 6000 feet deep.

To the east, the Turks Islands include Grand Turk and Salt Cay, the former the long-time home to government, the latter a tiny island named after the salt industry that once dominated the country.

To the west, the Caicos chain includes South, Middle and North Caicos and the island of Providenciales, known as Provo and home to the great majority of the nation’s tourist development.

A cruise to the Turks and Caicos will reveal the major attraction on all of the islands, the coasts: truly sensational white-sand beaches that stretch for miles offering world-class diving, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing and bonefishing

Inland there’s not much to see other than low-lying scrubby vegetation and, particularly in the Turks Islands, large expanses of featureless salinas from which Bermudian settlers and traders harvested salt during the islands’ early development.
