Discovering Plaza de Mayo

Buenos Aires is a must-see on your MSC South America cruise to Argentina. Its heart is the spacious, palm-dotted Plaza de Mayo, the ideal place to begin a tour of the area and explore its historical and political connections; its mismatched medley of buildings includes the famous Casa Rosada, or government house. An amble westwards from the plaza will take you along Avenida de Mayo, the city’s major boulevard, offering an impressive display of Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture. At its western end, Avenida de Mayo opens onto the Plaza del Congreso, presided over by the Congreso Nacional building, the seat of the federal parliament.

Casa Rosada, a typically Argentine blend of French and Italian Renaissance styles, stands on the site of the city’s Spanish fort, begun in 1594 and converted in 1776 to the viceroy’s palace. In 1862, President Bartolomé Mitre moved the government ministries to the building, remodelling it once again.

The final touch was added in 1885, when the central arch was added, unifying the facade. Behind the Casa Rosada, the Plaza Colón features a gigantic Argentine flag and a Carrara marble statue of Christopher Columbus, looking out to the river and towards the Old World.

MSC South America cruises also offer excursions to the north of Buenos Aires, where the four residential barrios of most interest to visitors – Retiro, Recoleta, Palermo and Belgrano – each retain a distinctive character. Nearest to the centre, Retiro and Recoleta – known jointly as Barrio Norte – have chic streets lined with boutiques, art galleries and smart cafés. Recoleta is associated primarily with its magnificent cemetery where, among other national celebrities, Evita is buried.

Both barrios also share an extraordinary concentration of French-style palaces, tangible proof of the obsession of the city’s elite at the beginning of the twentieth century with established European cities

  • VIEJO ALMACEN (show only)

    SOMETHING SPECIAL

    BUE27T

San Telmo, a typical corner in Buenos Aires, has the purest characteristics of the ancient city, not found in any other place. Going for a walk around its streets, you will notice that the ancient houses have survived the passage of time. Then, you’ll get to the soul of the neighborhood, the corner of Balcarce and Independencia, internationally renowned as the home of the most traditional tango house, the first one and, maybe, the one that has better preserved the true identity of Tango over the years: EL VIEJO ALMACÉN. The building was erected in that corner in the late 18th Century, more precisely in the year 1769, during the height of the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, and during the first years, it was used as a warehouse. The building’s capacity was increased in the 1940s, and it turned into the British Hospital. During the years 1850 and 1860, the National General Customs operated in the building. By that time, the corner of Arce (currently called Independencia) and Concepción (Balcarce) was not a place to be related with culture and show business. On the contrary, during the war with Paraguay (1865-1868), the premises were used to shelter wounded or sick soldiers. By the end of the century, the city grew with the arrival of immigrants from all over the world, who blended with our "criollos", and it is from that mixture that tango is born in these suburbs. In the early new century, the place started gaining the appearance it has today. It was run by Mrs. Paula Kravnik, from Russia, who was nicknamed "La Volga", and bohemians started to frequent the place to listen to popular music. In the year 1969, Edmundo Leonel Rivero turned it into a "Temple of Tango", and from that moment onwards, EL VIEJO ALMACEN became the can’t-miss stage for the leading exponents of Buenos Aires’ tango. Great Tango performers visited the place: Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Roberto Goyeneche, among many others. They shared their talent, and were appreciated and applauded by countless personalities such as King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía from Spain, the Presidents of different countries from the world, and many others who made it possible for EL VIEJO ALMACEN’s reputation to grow beyond our country. Nowadays, they have managed to maintain its authentic atmosphere, as well as the architectural details that allow the place to keep the charm of past days and the traditionalism of the day it was founded. Among their cast, they have famous performers who shine night after night; they try to offer an AUTHENTIC TANGO SHOW every day. The main characteristic of house is that it is not only visited by tourists from all around the world, but it is still the place chosen by Argentine people to listen to tango and vibrate to its rhythm. This combination gives EL VIEJO ALMACEN a unique magical quality in which cultural barriers between different nationalities disappear, and they all merge into one of the finest expressions of culture itself: the musical language. Please note: This excursion is only available for guests in transit. This excursion is only available for overnight calls. Dinner is not included in this excursion include two glasses of wine and water. Limited seats, book early to avoid disappointment. Studded with outstanding natural wonders and endowed with one of the world’s hot-list cities, Argentina is a vast and varied land.

Tapering from the Tropic of Capricorn towards the tip of Antarctica it encompasses a staggering diversity of terrains, from the lush wetlands of the Litoral and the bone-dry Andean plateaux of the north-west to the end-of-the-world archipelago of Tierra del Fuego. Its most emblematic landscapes are the verdant flatlands of the Pampas and the dramatic steppe of Patagonia, whose very name evokes windswept plains inhabited by hardy pioneers.

On a cruise to Argentina one of the top attractions is the leviathan metropolis of Buenos Aires, the most fascinating of all South American capitals. It’s a riveting place just to wander about, people-watching, shopping or simply soaking up the unique atmosphere. Its many barrios (neighbourhoods) are startlingly different – some are decadently old-fashioned, others daringly modern – but all of them ooze character.

A holiday to Argentina is a unique opportunity to visit the colonial Salta in the north-west, beguiling Rosario – the birthplace of Che Guevara – and Ushuaia, which, in addition to being the world’s most southerly city, enjoys a fabulous waterfront setting on the Beagle Channel.
