Shipwrecks and the mysterious Bermuda Triangle

Covering a huge, triangular-shaped area of ocean stretching between Bermuda, Miami and Puerto Rico is the infamous Bermuda Triangle. Swirled in decades of myths and rumours, legend has it that planes and ships that cross through the region can disappear for no discernible reason.

The claims have been challenged over time. For example, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration claims there is no evidence to suggest there are an unusually high number of disappearances in the area.

What isn’t disputed is that hundreds of ships have run aground on the reefs surrounding Bermuda. Two of Bermuda's most famous shipwrecks, double-decker steamer Montana and nearby Constellation, can be seen in more detail on snorkelling trips – an experience not to be missed.

Pristine sands and secluded coves galore

There’s an abundance of coastline to explore around Bermuda's islands, much of which varies significantly. Following a short walk down a steep path, lovers of remote and rugged beaches can delight in the empty swathes of sand at stunning Astwood Cove.

Fans of coral reefs and sea life will adore Tobacco Bay, where the calming waters teem with varieties of tropical fish, turtles and vibrant corals.

Horseshoe Beach – one of Bermuda’s headline attractions – will take your breath away, thanks to its pink-hued sand, whose unique colour comes from the pink and red shells of tiny organisms on the beach. Prepare to spend almost as much time snapping photos of this incredible landscape as you will enjoying those soft, pink sands.

Set sail to see Bermuda's oceans

Wannabe mariners can navigate Bermuda’s mighty and beautiful coral reef ecosystem safely on a sailboat, enjoying the views, secret coves and cool waters. A glass-bottom boat is the perfect way to see the natural wonders of the reef in astonishing detail and perhaps even spot a few shipwrecks along the way. These trips can even be taken at sunset, making for a particularly enjoyable way to experience the archipelago’s many islands, where superb sunsets are a near-daily occurrence.

Should the exotic waters inspire you, head to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (amongst other options), where visitors can learn the basics of sailing, equipping themselves for an independent trip.

However you choose to sail, do try to factor in some time for snorkelling or diving, as Bermuda’s clear, unspoilt waters are perfect for underwater exploring.
