Norwegian Fjords Cruises | MSC Cruises

Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Mountain trails, awe-inspiring fjords and unparalleled plant and wildlife – our Norway cruises were made for outdoor lovers.

Our Norway cruises are perfect for seeing the country’s magnificent outdoors. Each region has a different natural spectacle to offer, from snow and midnight sun in the north, to beaches touched by icy seas in the south; lush forests and peaks in the east to world-famous fjords in the west.

Any of these areas is a perfect choice for your Norway holidays, though little beats cruising Norwegian fjords like Hardangerfjord and the crown jewel of Geirangerfjord. The country has more than 1,700 of these vast valleys filled with seawater, formed from glaciers during the Ice Age. They stretch inland from the coast through eye-popping landscapes full of dramatic cliffs and waterfalls, quaint villages and looming mountains. Book an excursion on your Norwegian fjords cruise and explore them by boat, bike or on foot.

Natural wonders are abundant elsewhere. Near Tromsø, for example, you can e-bike or trek through the verdant hinterland with an Alaskan husky. Trondheim’s Bymarka nature reserve offers more than 200 kilometres of trails, 10 lakes and – in winter – cross-country skiing paths. Or, if you’re interested in urban life, our Norway cruises in 2025 and 2026 stop at the likes of Bergen and Oslo.

GOOD TO KNOW

All aboard the Flaam Railway

Don’t miss taking a ride on the famous Flaam Railway during any holiday to Norway, widely considered to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. It runs from the breathtaking Aurlandsfjord in Vestland county, along the river and high up into the mountains, ending at Myrdal Station.

Over the course of an hour, you’ll pass through all kinds of dramatic landscapes and be treated to spectacular views of soaring peaks and cascading waterfalls, including the 93-metre-high Kjosfossen Falls. Make sure to have your camera at the ready as the train slows or stops at the most photo-worthy places

GOOD TO KNOW

Hike and cycle the beautiful landscape

To get to the heart of the Norwegian fjords on any visit, it’s essential to spend some time exploring the great outdoors, just like the locals do: wander past thundering waterfalls, hike up Kletten mountain to give your legs a workout, paddle on Refvik and Selja beaches, or go cycling through scenic Flaam.

Norwegian Fjords Cruises, Bike tour | MSC Cruises

Remember, too, that you can get an up-close look at some of the most impressive scenery by taking a boat ride through the fjords, including the mighty Naerøyfjord – part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wherever you choose to visit on our Norway cruises, you’ll be stunned by just how magnificent the natural world really is.

GOOD TO KNOW

Experience the famous Fjords

Some of Norway’s most iconic fjords are, in fact, not its ‘main’ fjords, but their side arms. Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, for example, are two of the best known. Situated in south-western Norway, these natural marvels are among the country's longest and deepest fjords. Together, they make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site, having been recognised as such since 2005.

Norwegian Fjords cruises, Geirangerfjord | MSC Cruises

Experience the dramatic Nærøyfjord in full by booking onto an MSC Cruises excursion that includes a pleasure cruise past majestic, snow-covered mountains, rushing waterfalls and verdant landscapes, as well as featuring an equally exciting journey on dry land, when you travel through the epic Naerøydalen Valley by bus.

POPULAR PORTS

Norway Ports

An MSC Cruises Norway cruise stops at a wide range of convenient ports. Flaam houses a famous railway that passes through soaring mountains, Bergen and Oslo offer unique architecture and history, while Hellesylt-Geiranger, Eidfjord and other great spots are perfectly positioned for fjord visits.

POPULAR PORTS

Oslo Cruises

Norway’s capital city seamlessly combines old and new; culture and science; the manmade and the natural. Its Opera House is the perfect example: built in 2008, its striking design is a modern interpretation of a glacier rising out of the fjord. Visitors are encouraged to walk on its roof, while inside you can watch opera and ballet. Experience it along with other interesting sites, such as the Vigelandsparken sculpture park, on our excursions.

Norwegian Fjords cruises, Oslo | MSC Cruises

The Opera House sits on the Oslofjord, where there’s much more to explore. Book a boat tour during your Oslo cruise to admire the city’s sites from the sea, including the 13th-century Akerhus Fortress, then cruise past its many islands.

POPULAR PORTS

Flam Cruises

An itinerary featuring a visit to Flaam is a must on all cruises to Norwegian fjords. Few places offer such easy access to Norway’s most revered natural wonders as this small village, which sits at the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord. Enjoy a lengthy stroll along the Flaam river to soak it all in, hop on a pleasure cruise of the Aurlandsfjord and neighbouring Naerøyfjord, or take a ride on the world-renowned Flaam Railway.

Norwegian Fjords cruises, Flaam | MSC Cruises

And don’t miss the Stegastein Viewpoint on a cruise to Flaam – this platform extends 30 metres out from the cliffside and 650 metres above the fjord, supplying out-of-this-world views of the region’s outdoor treasures.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS

Bergen Cruises

Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city, but its quaint Hanseatic houses and narrow streets give it a cosy, small-town feel. Yet there’s still much to see. The Bryggen harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is unmissable. Visit it by bike or walking tour during your Bergen cruise. Then there are other sites, such as the aquarium, medieval Rosenkrantz Tower and a 13th-century royal residence, Håkon's Hall.

Norwegian Fjords cruises, Bergen | MSC Cruises

Get out of the city and visit one of the seven mountains that surround Bergen and which also give the city its name. Our excursions can take you up Mount Fløyen on the funicular railway to hike in the wilderness. Make sure to snap a photo of Bergen from above.

Insider tips for a better trip

1.

Make sure to bring your camera when exploring Måløy and its surrounds in western Norway. Nearby Oppedal is home to the incredible Kannesteinen rock formation. The mushroom-shaped marvel is made of gneiss, a dark metamorphic rock that has been shaped by wind, waves and ice over centuries.

2.

Make a pilgrimage to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim and become one of the thousands of people who have travelled here since the Middle Ages to see the famous tomb of St Olav. The ornate religious building is also the world’s northernmost Gothic cathedral – don’t miss the view from its tower.

3.

Langfoss Waterfall, which plummets 612 metres into the Åkrafjord below, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Walk to the top on a summit hike or get close to the spray on a boat ride. Late spring is the best time to visit, as snowmelt makes the cascade more powerful.

Norwegian Fjords cruises FAQs

When is the best time to cruise the Norwegian fjords?

A cruise to Norway is great all year round, but the best time to visit is often seen as being between late spring and early autumn. May and June offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Nature is also at its peak, with fresh greenery, full waterfalls thanks to recent snowmelt, and - in the northern regions - the midnight sun. July and August are particularly popular months for Norway holidays, as the weather is at its warmest and ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking. The number of visitors can also decrease in September, so this is an excellent time for a Norwegian fjords cruise. Plus, the weather is still good and you'll witness the landscape transforming into its marvellous autumnal colours.

What is the weather like in Norway?

Norway's weather varies depending on the region and the season, so make sure to check exactly where you're going to be during your holidays in Norway. In general winters are cold and - in many places - snowy. In spring, the snow starts to melt and make its way into the waterfalls, while temperatures start to climb and the flora and fauna begin to emerge. This makes it an ideal time for a cruise to Norway - as is summer, when there's little rainfall, the daylight hours are long and average temperatures are typically between 15°C and 25°C in the south.

Which ports do MSC Cruises visit in Norway?

Stopping at a range of ports, our Norwegian fjord cruises showcase the country's natural beauty and heritage. Oslo, the capital, is the only embarkation port and an excellent place to start acquainting yourself with the local traditions. As you cruise, you'll also encounter scenic destinations such as Flaam, Hellesylt, Geiranger, Bergen, Eidfjord, Molde Fjord, Alesund, Nordfjordeid, Leknes, Maloy, Vik i Sogn, Olden, Stavanger, Tromsø and Trondheim, each providing access to Norway's iconic fjords. Discover Haugesund's rich Viking history, visit Honningsvåg near the North Cape - the northernmost accessible point in mainland Europe - and explore Hammerfest, the world's northernmost town. For an Arctic adventure, Longyearbyen in Svalbard brings you closer to Norway's wild northern islands, while Kristiansand sits on the southernmost coast of the country. All the ports hold their own unique appeal and attractions on our Norway holidays.

How much is a cruise to Norway and Norwegian Fjords?

Here's some great news for anyone conscious of sticking to a budget with their holidays: MSC Cruises has an itinerary to suit all price ranges, opening up Norway's bucket list landscapes to everyone. Check our Norwegian fjords cruise deals to find the perfect itinerary for you, whatever you're looking to spend.

What to pack for a Norwegian fjords cruise?

When choosing what to bring on a Norwegian fjords cruise, prepare for adventure. You'll likely be spending lots of time outside and perhaps even at different altitudes if you're planning on doing some hiking, so pack accordingly. Choose light layers, starting with a moisture-wicking base, a second top for warmth if needed, and a waterproof jacket to protect against any rainfall or spray from waterfalls. Comfortable and waterproof walking shoes are also essential, as are sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat. Swimwear is also handy in case you go for a dip or try a traditional Norwegian sauna. Finally, make sure to pack some more formal or smarter clothes and shoes, so that you'll feel right at home if attending some of the more extravagant onboard dinners and events, including our famous Gala Nights.

What is the currency in Norway?

Norway's official currency is the Norwegian krone, abbreviated as kr. One krone is made up of 100 øre.

What is the time zone in Norway?

Norway uses Central European Time (CET), but observes daylight-saving time during the summer. This means when you go on your holidays to Norway you'll always be one hour ahead of the UK.

What other countries are included in a cruise that goes to Norwegian Fjords?

Our Norway cruises may include stops in a variety of other European countries, giving you the chance to explore other hotspot destinations before or after your Norwegian adventure. Soak up Scandinavian living in Denmark's vibrant capital, Copenhagen, where cafe culture and canals await, or explore Hamburg's urban charms and maritime history. Further fantastic landscapes can be found and roamed in Sweden, and Iceland's otherworldly landscapes (including black-sand beaches) are also within reach. Other countries that can be visited on a Norwegian cruise include Belgium, United Kingdom, Svalbard Islands, Poland, Finland and Lithuania, offering up yet more of Europe's finest sights.

Where do Norwegian fjords cruises depart from?

You can start your Norway holidays from several different places in Europe. Our Norway cruises depart from Southampton in the UK, Kiel, Warnemünde and Hamburg in Germany, and Copenhagen in Denmark. Make your life easier by choosing one of our Fly & Cruise packages, which transport guests from Belfast and Newcastle to Southampton's cruise terminal.

What is Norway famous for?

Norway's northern and southern regions are renowned for many different things. The far north is known for its indigenous Sami heritage, from reindeer herding to traditional joik singing. Northern regions such as Tromsø, Svalbard and the Lofoten Islands are fantastic places to witness the spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, as well as the summertime phenomenon of midnight sun. The west is home to the country's most famous fjords, found in the Fjord Norway region. It's known for hiking and fishing, waterside villages and - of course - the sheer beauty of fjords such as Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord. Further south, you'll find cities such as Bergen - famous for its historic harbour district, Bryggen - and the capital city of Oslo. Here you can discover modern Nordic cuisine, learn about the country's Viking heritage at the Historical Museum and The Viking Planet, and marvel at architectural gems such as the Oslo Opera House and the floating Oslo Fjord Sauna. Experience it all on a Norway cruise with MSC Cruises.
